Bend-La Pine Schools Update by Shirley

Coming out of the Pandemic was a real challenge for public schools; students, staff, and families all had to readjust to “real school.” Bend-La Pine Schools was one of the first to bring back students to in-class instruction…still with many modifications that made the school different. We are now on a solid path of recovery and our students are thriving!

  • Bend-La Pine added a new high school to better distribute students in grades 9-12; Caldera High School is a modern version of both facility and programs.

  • A Bond Measure was supported by the Bend, Sunriver, La Pine communities for a facilities update to existing schools. Additional safety measures, such as classroom door locks, secure vestibules, and equipment replacements were implemented. In addition, a MAJOR renovation of Bend Senior High School is on schedule for completion in a couple more years.

  • Recognizing that students are often not included in school district policy and procedure development, a Student Voice Council was established to bring student input directly to the Board and administration. High school students from across the district come to the table for every scheduled business meeting of the Board.

  • All Board Policies and Regulations are now being reviewed and updated to reflect new laws and regulations.  Policies are shared for public input on a regular basis.

  • Successful negotiations with both Bend Education Association (teachers) and local chapter of Oregon School Employees Association (classified staff) were completed in 2024 with 3-year contracts.

  • Curriculum changes have been made, with new adoptions of the latest programs for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. Professional development is ongoing to ensure consistent implementation across district schools.

  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) is growing in our high schools, with over 30 programs offering students opportunities to explore careers and have real-world experiences.

  • A working protocol between the Superintendent and the Board of Directors was developed to clarify roles and responsibilities. With several retirements and resignations, the District has new administrators at the school and district level. We are confident that our leadership is exceptional and sustainable.

  • A new Strategic Plan is in progress, identifying goals and targets for student achievement for ALL students. Surveys and focus groups have added to our vision and commitments.

  • High School graduation rates are climbing, with an eight-point percentage gain at La Pine High School. All high school graduation rates are above the state average.

  • The Board recently renewed policies on Equity and Inclusion, and reiterated the stance on immigration protection, as afforded by Oregon State Law.

  • I BELIEVE IN EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE FOR ALL STUDENTS, and do as I can to support students in our schools!
